Jade working at the Maya ruins of Copan, Honduras
Archaeologists working at Copan uncovered several sacred offerings of jade which was not fully finished. These artifacts reveal all the ancient tool marks, so studying these will help learn about how the Maya carved jade, which is harder than steel. The Maya themselves had no metal tools. This section of the Maya archaeology web site will be updated periodically as we have time and funding to add new material about jade working in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. FLAAR offers courses of instruction in jade, at Copan. The FLAAR Art & Archaeology Book Service offers books on Maya jade.
