Copan Maya Archaeology Participation and Program Fee

Volunteer opportunities to study Maya iconography directly with ancient Maya art in Guatemalan museums

The Copan program was for 1998. If you want the current program, use the link above

If you wish a personal and private course, either for just yourself, or for you and your friends, so that you learn in peace and quiet, we can arrange this for you, at Copan, either in advance of the regular schedule, or on the day(s) immediately after the regular schedule. We can train you in whatever aspects you care to learn. And we can avoid whatever aspects you do not wish to get involved with. Cost based on particulars. JGU Venus on Jaguar Stairway

If you wish to use the rollout cameras and actually take your own rollouts, fee is $1500 plus your room and board. This includes all the brush-up and refresher courses as well.

If you wish to learn all about rollout cameras, see and experience the actual process, but do not feel a need to use the cameras yourself, fee is $600. If you also wish to understand more about how the system actually functions, we highly recommend that you take the general introductory refresher courses as well. Fee for these is listed as following.

Basic course in Macintosh computers, or brush-up if you normally use a PC but are new to the Mac world. $300 if we provide access to a computer, $50 if you bring your own Mac portable. We have computer for you to learn on that will be quite an experience for you. This introduction, however, is in no way required. You can enjoy learning all about rollout photography and never set your finger on a computer keyboard if you so prefer. This course is limited to three people since there is obviously not a surplus of Mac laptops at Copan.

Basic course in Adobe Photoshop, or brush-up if you have dabbled with it before, or refresher to get you up to speed, $300 if we provide access to computer; $100 if you bring your own portable. Recommended, but certainly not required. Again, limited to three people.

Basic course in Adobe PageMaker, required if you wish to do any print-outs of the rollouts yourself. $100. Limited to three people.

Rollout prints, which you can take home and frame, per rollout, $20 in color or $10 in b+w. If you want the pot in 3D together with the rollout to show them both, both together are $25 in color, $15 in b+w. If you want large format, $100 for 24", $200 for 36" wide. No obligation; these are entirely optional.

Schedule for the Rollout Photography Session:

Arrive San Pedro Sula; transfer to Copan Ruinas (you may opt for your own cab, or pre-arranged pickup; write for details; cost is an estimated $100 to $150, or less, depending on how many arrive on the same flight).
If you do not need refresher or general introduction, you can delay and arrive later.
Basic introduction to Macintosh systems, hands-on-practice. Rollout system will be introduced as well.
Basic introduction to digital imaging, Adobe Photoshop. Any clever or capable person can learn. We will work on actual rollouts.
Introduction to rollout photography of Maya vases starts today.
More rollout photography, and learning how to print out your results. What an opportunity. Adobe Pagemaker is taught today for those who signed up (not required).

Although no previous photographic experience is required, and whereas it is equally not required that you be a computer whiz, obviously we cannot guarantee how far you will advance (other than that you will surely know more when you are finished than you did before you came). It should be equally apparent that some of the instruction and much of the equipment will be rather sophisticated. It is perfectly normal to use technical equipment and not necessarily know precisely what makes it tick. Our goal in this program is to give you an educational experience in an atmosphere of intellectual enjoyment. This is not a forced labor camp not are you graded at the end.
Cafe at Copan ruins.

But please realize that the level of instruction will seek the average of all those present. If you feel you prefer more time, additional explanation, please be sure to sign up for the ancillerary courses, or private instruction, as appropriate. Again, our guarantee is that you will be exposed to information that will be fascinating and educational for you; how much of this you absorb depends on many factors, from your brain cells to the weather. We are responsible for giving instruction, but you are responsible for receiving it.

Hotel, meals, and airfare are a personal expense and covered individually. The hotels in Copan are charming (we will gladly recommend some) and Copan has great restaurants, such as Tunkul.

If you wish to study Spanish while you are in Copan, this is a great place.
