Which printers can best reproduce full-page photographs?

Here at the Digital Imaging Technology Center we have tried out all kinds of laser printers. We also attend most of the trade shows to check out which new laser printers are the best for desktop publishing.

The FLAAR review editor attends Seybold, Graph Expo, Comdex, as well as trade shows in Germany such as Photokina, CeBIT, and DRUPA. Our recommendation for 11x17 oversize is the GCC XL model which can handle 1200 dpi. This printer will handle paper up to 13 x 35 inches in size.

The image above is a Maya vase (at the left) with a circumferential turntable rollout photograph (at the right). To learn how this photo is peeled off the circumference, check out www.digital-photography.org. The black area is fire clouding, a result of the primitive kilns used in the 8th century. Vase photographed at the Museo Popol Vuh, Universidad Francisco Marroquin, Guatemala City.

If you need help in deciding what professional black-and-white laser printer to select, send an e-mail to Nicholas Hellmuth at FLAARMaya@aol.com. Specify what kind of originals you have, what kind of shop or business (or hobby) you need this printer for, what state or country you are located in, and we will do our best to provide informative assistance. No, we do not sell printers (our institute is non-profit) but we know plenty of people in the laser printer business and can give you tips how to get precisely what you need.

To learn more about the monochrome printer we have found to be the best for black-and-white desktop publishing, Contact GCC Technologies, Bob Kinsella, tel (800) 422-7777, fax (800) 442-2329, e-mail bkinsella@gcctech.com.
